SoundExchange Overview: SoundExchange has been designated by the US Library of Congress to administer, collect & distribute digital radio Performance Royalties for *Non-Interactive Play on Internet, Satellite, & Cable Digital Radio Providers. These royalties are paid to the sound recording copyright owner (label and/or publisher) AND the featured performing artist when the song is played on a non-interactive digital source.
*Non-Interactive play means that the listener cannot Select, Fast Forward, Rewind, Jump to another song. The song does not reside on any personal equipment or streaming account. You are required to listen to songs as the station plays or streams, including commercials - just like listening to the radio.
** Examples of Digital Radio Providers such as SiriusXM & Pandora.
As a Songwriter/Composer can I earn royalties from SoundExchange?
No, these royalties are paid to the sound recording copyright owner (label and/or publisher) AND the featured performing artist when the song is played on a non-interactive digital radio provider. Songwriting & composition are covered by professional organizations such as ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC.
Royalty Distribution is calculated as:
45-50% Featured Artist on the recording
05% Guest Artist (if applicable)
50% Label/Publisher - the Rights Owner of the recording
