What is Digital Music Downloading and Streaming?

The Download of digital songs is considered in the same category as a physical sale. The listener physically owns the music on their personal device or cloud. They can choose to listen to the song at any time.

Web-based Streaming services let users stream songs to their computers or mobile devices. These are divided into two categories:

  • Interactive which include paid-for memberships and subscription services in which the listener may choose which songs they listen to and when.

  • Non-Interactive are services in which the listener cannot determine which song is played at which time. This includes services such as online and satellite radio, streaming programs, and podcasts.
